friend from Boston rode his Kawasaki Ninja 1000 down and he rolled in late Friday
afternoon. He had already toured Tennesee, Virginia, W. Virginia, Alabama, Georgia,
Mississippi, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Since April 1, Mark Holbrook had logged 3,456 miles so
far on his epic journey. Friday evening was good.Weather was clear... got in a bit of riding.
Then came Saturday.
Not even the rain could deter us.
We saddled up and headed out to have lunch with the family down in Cisco and ran through
shower after shower. On the way back it was the same. Got back to PK Lake and it cleared
up. Rode all around the lake and got in at 10:30 p.m.
Left out this morning (Sunday) and rode down Hwy 4. Had to turn around and go back to Palo
Pinto looking for Mark's glasses, which unfortunately we never found, but gave us reason
to ride Hwy 4 again! Whoo!! Hoo!! Too bad two little old
ladies out for a Sunday drive and scared to death of curves had to slow us down on the
last pass but we finally found a clear spot and shot around them. Cooled off a bit at
Santo then hit I-20 down to Gordon and then Mingus on to Strawn.
That was where Joe & I said goodbye to Mark and turned back North while Mark heads
south and to the Hill Country, then on to Big Bend. After he does Big Bend and the Davis
Mountains he will head into New Mexico and then on to Tucson, AZ.
From there he'll go North and tour Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, S. Dakota, Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and on back through New York to Massachusetts. I
envy that man!!
At least we helped him add over 400 miles while he was here.
I was a good ride.... Joe and I wish him well on his journey.

Update on Mark Holbrook's travels |
We received a card from Mark...
Thanks, Mark! By now he is in Tucson, Arizona, or headed north from there,
after having spent time in the Hill County of Texas (that's the area north of Austin, for
you folks outside of Texas).
Mark spent the night in Colorado Bend State Park, then had an overnight stop
at Ft. Stockton before going on to Big Bend country for some exploration. He said
that down in the Rio Grande Valley the temps hit 104 degrees where he was camping out.
We're used to that. He is not! He rode to Presidio and skinny-dipped in
the river to cool off. I hope no one was looking. <g>
When Mark reached Ft. Davis, he met up with a couple from Houston on a
Goldwing and they shared camp at a nearby State Park. Seems there was a mighty stiff
wind that nearly blew them away.
From Ft. Davis, Mark rode to Guadalupe, New Mexico and then on up to
Carlsbad Caverns where he walked the entire cave. After that he rode on to
Cloudcroft, NM and camped out off a dirt road in the national forest since all the
campgrounds were still closed. He was at an elevation of 8500 ft. and said it was
"cold". At the time he sent us the card he was having a great, cheap
breakfast at the Western Cafe in Cloudcroft. Remember that if you're ever in that
town. :) Hopefully Mark will check in with us again
before he gets back to the Boston Area. If so, I'll keep you, his friends, posted.

Update:
On the 8th of May, Mark wrote:
"Right now I'm in a library in Lakewood, CO, waiting for a
nearby shop to mount new tires on my bike. Wore them out in 8300 miles, especially the
sides of the front (love them curves!). Visited my folks in Tucson and did all the
touristy things there are to do in NM, AZ, UT, and CO (and found a few good twisty roads).
Heading for Ft. Collins, then Nebraska, tomorrow."
