Bike Night

It all started with a suggestion that Texas members of Intruder Alert get together for a ride in the Hill Country. One member way up in the Texas Panhandle felt a little left out, thinking that a more centralized location was in order. He mentioned Possum Kingdom Lake as an alternative. What started out as the Texas/Oklahoma Get-together, turned out to be one of the best and most memorable motorcycle events many of us had ever attended. After a unanimous vote to make it an annual event, the name was changed to the Dead Snakes and Tumbleweeds Southwest IA Rally.

Some members started out early Friday morning coming from all over Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Riding the furthest, Gary Paul rode 581 miles from his home in Northeast Arkansas. Although Intruder Alert is a group for owners of the Suzuki Intruder, our members own motorcycles of all brands. In attendance at the rally were Suzukis including a 250, a Yamaha, a Kawasaki, and several Hondas, and Harleys.

We initially gathered in front of the office at Hideaway cabins by the Lake, greeting the new arrivals as they came in. While we were meeting and greeting below in the parking lot, Mark was up the hill having a little problem. He had his feet planted precariously in the loose gravel and his arms were stressed to the limit trying to keep his Honda Shadow from sliding down a steep slope as he beeped an SOS on his horn. While we were oblivious to his peril, a Mom and her child came to his rescue and pulled him and his Shadow away from the slippery slope. It will be a while before he lives this down.

After checking in we all went to the Pizza Pro where we enjoyed great pizza and kegs of homebrew offered by James (Fat Kid) and Darrel (Blackbeard). It was definitely some of the best pizza I've ever had. While we ate and drank we conversed with fellow riders getting to know each other. The deer in the parking lot and across the street were a warning to us that we would have to be watchful as we traversed the roads around PK.

Saturday morning started out cool and clear. We gathered again in front of Hideaway and Ricky led us on our ride and sightseeing tour of the lake, which included a spectacular view of Hell's Gate. We had a great ride with awesome twisties and made several rest stops that included a delicious lunch at Foy's Steak House in Graham. The ride continued after lunch with more great roads around Jacksboro and the East side of PK Lake.

The tired but happy group returned to home base to the enticing smell of BBQ ribs, chicken, and bratwurst prepared by Kim (Aftershock) and James (Fat Kid a.k.a. TheCottens). It didn't take long for all the food to be devoured by the famished riders. It's amazing what a good ride will do for your appetite. After dinner, David (Drifter) announced the winners in the 50/50 raffle. Several of the members had collected donations from their local dealers and we had many prizes to give away. A special thanks goes to Kerry (Merlin), who started Intruder Alert, for the T-shirts he donated for the rally. Julie and Ricky Easter (Flat top) were the lucky winners of the cash prize in the raffle.

Sunday morning was another beautiful day. We couldn't have asked for better weather. We had a farewell breakfast at the Green Frog in Jacksboro. It was a sad moment when we said our good-byes, but left with promises of getting together in the near future for more rides. All had a good time and everyone is looking forward to the next Dead Snakes and Tumbleweed Southwest IA Rally.
