Sac to Downieville nonstop...
We launch up I 80 jumping off 174 rolling through Nevada City... then a cautious jaunt up
2 lane cop infested H20 before right turning onto H49
where we enjoyed some of the best bendy bits that line the path to Downieville... now 12
miles shy of Downieville I'm nursing a red low
fuel light with reserves good for only 15 miles... (at least that's how I recall running
dry mid span Carquinez bridge last year...) well just
as I dismount next to the welcome gas pumps Holly booms by and continues to big gulp the
road as if she doesn't see me... which she doesn't... so
now it takes another mile to catch her and another mile back to the pumps... I expected to
hear the injectors fart quits anysecond... Mercy...
At the counter a Miner 49er reaches for my gas money and asked... "where are you
heading sonny???
"Truckee" I say...
"What's going on in Truckee?" he fires back...
"North American Reeky Tour" I reply...
"North American DRINKING Tour?" he frowns...
"NO sir... North American R E E K Y Tour" I affirm...
"Does your buddy also want gas?" he quizzes...
"She does"

H49 to Sierraville onto H89...
Out side the town of Sierraville Holly and I overtake the two wheel equivalent of the odd
couple... Heritage Soft Tail Harley and a
Hayabusa... rice and hog (in that order) are in perfect formation... I think the Buse
pilot had had enough because he said C-Ya and began to
tag along even though our 90 mph pace was brisk... I think we all agree that staying
within the awful lawful posted limit is bad enough on any
sportbike but on a Busa it's like sitting on corn flake without breaking it... I figure
the straights will free the pilot's right wrist enough
for him to give it all berries... so I monitor the Busa in my mirror for the signature
1300cc blew by you fast enough to suck fairings off
pass... but then suddenly the "Oh Shit" meter signals the party is over it's
time to yark on the brakes and since it's the deadly digital Ka...
I yark hard before it's too late... mercy I almost got pee running down my leg before I
figure out that Mr.CHP is a good 1/2 mile away and
buried behind a gaggle of slow movers... whew there's plenty of time for the 3 of us
baddies to don our 30 mph halos... god bless Beltronics...

Our 59 dollar room at the Builtmore... they goofed and we were charged weekday rates which
came to 100 dollar less than normal weekend rates...

North Shore Lake Tahoe...
Sunday morning finds the wind blowing and a chilly 37 degrees but no precipitation...
yet... just look west (right over our shoulders) at the
storm clouds building right in Holly's path to the Sacramento valley...
I don't think she could have had worse weather... The shirts... safe in the tail
cowl... are on the way east to the Reno Air Races...

Stead Field Reno...
The mounting weather threaten the Reno Air Races but the conditions never deteriorated
beyond visual flight rules... for insurance Ma Deuce
enforces the no rain dance rule...

for cutting a pylon... Rare Bear is the 2004 unlimited
champion...

After the night spent with friends at University of Reno and after the storms clear Reno I
launch home only to face snow in the form of slush
at Truckee... I exit the freeway and eat at the Wagon Wheel Cafe once again and hold for
dry conditions...
